Oren – Design intent
I would like to explore Len Lyes ideas of abstract movement thropugh the medium of video. I like the sketchy aesthetic that his film work contains and would like to produce a video with a similar visual look by using half life to create object movement.

Team Flash is made up for four spectacular designers. They have been assigned to design a pathway in half-life 2 to get from one end of the map to another using bridges and elevators. Having done some intense discussing and brainstorming the following team members have been assigned to design the following components for the map.
Team Assignment:
• Michael – Bridge platform construction analyst
• Ezra – Bridge structural engineer
• Ankit – Elevator platform fabrication consultant
• Tony – Lift Guy/Wire Man: Movement specialist
TEAM RALPH – Kelly, Sez, Hepa & Alex
As a group, our idea is to use a Len Lye and Alexander Calder’s idea of movement behind many of his kinetic sculptures such as the wind wand in New Plymouth and the water whirler. We are inspired by the minimal approach that he uses in terms of materials and form. We intend to use a thin and tall form which will sway like one of his sculptures. We also intend to use transparent textures in the design. The physics constraints that we are using are gravitational pull upwards and downwards, weight shifting, momentum (p=mv) and balance.
PLAN
1. Our form will be made up from many boxes, which are connected with the weld tool.
2. The form starts off horizontal. 3 group members will then stand inside a “cage” which will be at the end of the form. The cage will have an opening on the top to allow the players to get in.

3. The 4th member (who is not in the box) will attach balloons to the box, lifting the form up to a vertical state, meaning that the 3 members are now lifted high up off the ground. The form is now slightly unstable and sways because of its height, the weight of the group members and the balloons holding it up.
4. They then move to the right side of the box, shifting the weight of the form so it tilts toward the other side of the map.
5. The person on the ground then shoots the balloons causing the form to lean and fall on to the other side of the map, creating a bridge. Yay!
6. The 3 group members have now been transported to the other side. They then have to connect the form to the ground so the 4th and last group member can now walk across the bridge.
7. There’s an elevator waiting for them on the other side. The elevator will be made using various tools such as basketball, slider and elastic.
8. 4 members of the group will hop into the container. The container has been tied down with explosives by a rope tool. Once all 4 members have climed into the container, they then shoot the explosive allowing the rope to break and the container will move upwards.
9. Once the container reached the top, the 4 member will then walk out to the ground.

group wastedprotential energy? is using the precedent of len lye to construct a grand structure to transport players over and up. our main idea bonding us all together is elasticity and the use of stored energy. we are going to stick to the same overall asthetic, this being our use of material. black, shiney/brushed metal with hints of red. this red is going to symbolize where there is stored energy, and also as a kind of guide for player interaction.

Design Intent :
Creation of enclosed space through movement of objects in a mobile fashion
Spanning of space and bridging of voids through mobile type Movement
Use of physics within HL2 to represent and manipulate real life movement of Alexander Calders Mobiles
Plan :
1. Bridge the void using kinetic motion rather than static bridge by building hanging mobile structure
2. Ascend cliff face by way of physics and kinetic vs potential energy in a manner fitting that of Calders mobile movment
Job :
- Cherry – Elevator Specialist + Camera man + Movie Editor
- Rhys – Bridge Instructor + Theorist/Protagonist
- Alia – Bridge plateform construction analyist
- JoJo(Xiaoyi) – Elevator Specialist + Camera man + White Mouse
- Joanne(Hyebin) – Bridge Structural Engineer

As a group we are looking at Alexander Calder, we are all taking his ideas of balance, hierarchy and movement and incorporating these concepts into our final constructs. As well as his way of arranging a changeable composition that becomes increasingly interesting when layers begin to build up on each other opening up different paths and functions.
Our constructs function and movements will all be controlled with the havoc game engine, using real time user interactions to shape the constructs aesethtic and function.

Using Alexander Calder’s hanging mobiles. I have chosen to take certain principal aspects from which I see defines the functionality and visual aesthetics of his pieces, such as balance, scale and repetition of form.
These three aspects coordinate well together, as well as the ability to conform to many others from the remainder of the group.

I like the way Len Lye protrays movement as a sort of dance, and makes a relation between a motion and an emotion. Like music the motion can create different effects on the viewer. His movies are the best at showing this aspect of his work. Dancing forms: he makes movement as powerful as sound.

The idea behind structures and movement are based on the weight of the different objects. When I talk about weight is an idea of fooling the common sense and making big objects appear to be very lightweight.
As the user looks at the environment he will notice that the colours in the objects go from completely dark to a lighter colour. Bigger objects will appear to be lighter and smaller objects will be darker to make the small objects look like they are heavier than the big objects.
Apart from playing with sizes and colour it will have a sequence of different components that for them to be able to move they will have to be triggered with a first movement and after this object is triggered it will trigger more objects and ending on the user being launched into the other level. That last part will be as the group part.

I am going to look at Alexander Calder’s work for this project. He uses engineering balance of the sculptures and utilises these to develop the kinetic sculptures. One of his mobile works, Red Mobile, is made up of delicately balanced, colourful sheet-metal shapes. I want to study how these elements are connected together and balance itself as a mobile. I like the aesthetic of the mobiles with colourful metal sheets and I want to incorporate this with my model for this project.
